You have to understand that not every church nor every pastor nor every person believes in the same thing. God is to be personalized by you.
Phillipians 2:12-14 '...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing..'
That says to me to find Him on your own, learn Him, recognize Him and figure out how to be saved by Him and do it with fear (reverence) of Him without arguing with everyone around you. We tend to want everyone to do it for us and we follow others blindly a lot. We oftentimes think someone else knows best or knows how to do it better. That is not always the case. The bible says to know it for yourself. If God says move, then you best be moving. Learn to hear the voice of God within you and learn to recognize His love. Ask Him to show you and He will if you really mean it. He knows your heart and He knows your intentions. He is someone that cannot be fooled.
I had to learn in my life as well, that the fear of God and the fear that people put in us does not compare at all. I struggled with that for a while until God showed me what real love feels like. He showed me. He didn't send a person to show me, but He filled me with His tangible presence of love. Now I know what real love is and He taught me to respect Him because He first loved me. God does hold our keys to life and how we live. If we always do things out of disrespect to Him, He can give us some not so good things in our lives to help us understand how to act better. He does what any good father would do to keep his child in line with what is right and just, so they learn how to grow up and be good adults. The same with God. God just so happens to be in charge of the world as well.
